Meet Erin, an epidemiologist and medical doctor, and Erin, a disease ecologist, who spend their valuable time researching and discussing all manner of medical maladies, from infectious diseases to infertility and everything in between.
I've been listening to them since 2018 and they continued to produce content throughout the pandemic, doing a series on "The Anatomy of a Pandemic" and then returning to their usual programming.
While the podcast started out as information gathering and sharing about infectious diseases, they have since branched out to include other health conditions such as genetic and chromosomal disorders, fertility issues (including endometriosis and menopause), diabetes and even gout.
I've been sharing this podcast and specific episodes with those students I think will enjoy and learn from it. Some of the topics are not for younger audiences, but since the Grade 12 students learn about the ins and outs of the reproductive system and genetics, I've shared those episodes with them. With my Grade 11 students, I've shared episodes on immunity and some of the infectious diseases caused by micro-organisms that are covered in the syllabus.
Why was the 1918 influenza epidemic referred to as the "Spanish flu" and what was its strangest symptom? What is the difference between typoid and typhus? Which disease was first used biological warfare? And how did a flea help to wipe out most of Europe during the "Great Mortality?"
All these questions and more are answered by the Erins. This Podcast Will Kill You is informative and entertaining. Listen on their website, on Spotify, Patreon or wherever you like to listen.
